Killers In The Mist

Overview
While preparing to set anchor in Aialak Bay on a rainy evening, I spotted these three "transient" (mammal eating) killer whales skirting the edge of a cove just as a beam of sunlight shone through to back light their blows. They surfaced about four times and it wasn't until the last breath that they came up in unison and I grabbed this shot. They were likely heading toward the tidewater glacier in search of their prey, harbor seals. These whales are part of a group on the edge of extinction, the AT1 population. Their numbers radically declined after the Exxon Valdez oilspill in 1989 and now only seven individuals remain. The AT1 population is currently listed as "depleted" by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
