While kayaking out of Pederson Lagoon in Aialak Bay, this harbor seal curiously surfaces nearby. My experience kayaking in glacial areas of harbor seal habitat is that they are incredibly shy and you cannot get close to them. The are curious and will often surface far behind your kayak, but when you turn around to look they duck out of sight! While most harbor seals in glacial areas of Alaska are shy and avoid humans, the harbor seals in areas of high and increasing traffic are becoming habituated to human presence--like this animal.
