Overview
During the winter breeding waters of the main Hawaiian Islands, humpback whales commonly display a "tail slapping" behavior. Tail slapping usually occurs when other whales are in the area. In this instance, there were three males pounding their flukes at eachother nearby. During the all-male pounding exhibition, this female with a newborn calf tail-slapped about 15 times and left the area with her calf. The males followed not far behind. This behavior is common in the warmer latitudes where the whales winter to breed and calve. Although research continues to decode the mysteries, it appeared in this case that a group of males were engaged in a competitive battle with eachother--in theory to win the female as a mate.
