Fluke Up

Overview
In the winter breeding waters of the main Hawaiian Islands, humpback whales commonly display a "tail slapping" behavior, typically when other whales are in the area. In this instance, there were two males pounding their flukes at eachother before this one tail-slapped more than 30 times, raised its flukes high and then sounded for a dive. This behavior is common in the warmer latitudes where the whales winter to breed and calve. Although research continues to decode the mysteries, in this case it was a male engaged in what appeared to be a competitive battle with several other males--in theory to win the female as a mate.
