Overview
While kayaking out of Pederson Lagoon in Aialak Bay with a friend, this black bear was eating salmon carcasses that lay along the shoreline after spawning. I paddled a little closer and sat quietly drifting in my kayak while looking through the camera viewfinder for the perfect shot. The bear looked up, saw me--and then licked its nose of salmon it had been eating. Because it was a larger bear that could probably run faster than I can paddle, I decided to leave the area. However, when I put my camera in my lap to pick up the paddle I saw that I was surrounded by grass and only sitting in about 2 inches of water! I looked for my friend and she was what seemed like several football fields away from me! I carefullly paddled backward through the silt bottom keeping my eyes on the bear--and it keeping its eyes on me! Once I was in deep enough water to paddle the bear resumed its salmon feast. My friend was relieved to have her kayak partner return.
