Lori's pull to the ocean was intrinsic. She was a 9-year-old tomboy living in the landlocked state of Colorado where she painted her room deep royal blue, took her weekly allowance and decorated it with seashells, aquariums, fish, whales and dolphins and dreamed of spending her life in, on and around the ocean. That was in 1971, the same year she won an award for drawing a dolphin.
Although the child who dreamed of oceans did not lay eyes on one until she turned 22, Lori's love for photographing animals was apparent at 9 years old when she was given the family's old Brownie camera. Despite the urging of her mother (a single parent of three paying for the film and processing) to photograph people and other things, all of Lori's pictures were of her pets – and all of the neighbor's pets, too!
Lori earned degrees in health and human science, ocean science and environmental law and policy from the following academic institutions:
Master of Marine Affairs, University of Washington
- Ocean Policy Graduate Certificate, University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
- Master of Science, University of Northern Colorado
- Bachelor of Science, University of Northern Colorado
Her resume includes collaborative work on local and global scale marine science and mitigation projects with various federal, state and local government agencies as well as, non-profit organizations including:
- United States Coast Guard (USCG)
- Department of Defense - US Navy (DOD)
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

She intends to continue her photographic journey to give the beauty and interconnectedness inherent in the natural world a voice, in hope that it will inspire others to become stewards in the preservation of our beautiful blue planet.
